Trust Your Instinct: How Standing Fox Found Its Name

The name Standing Fox came before the wine.

On our first evening at the property, we sat on the terrace drinking wine and celebrating the beginning of a new chapter. We had made an intentional choice, but like most important choices, it had asked us to trust something we could not yet prove.

As we sat there, a fox came out of the forest. It walked to a boulder, climbed onto it and stood looking at us.

For a moment, it felt as though the land itself were agreeing that we had made the right decision.

We did not see that fox again while the estate was being rebuilt and the first wines were taking shape. Then, on the first evening we opened a bottle of Standing Fox wine to share with friends, it returned.

Four of us were sitting around the fire pit on the terrace with two dogs. The fox’s head appeared first at the top of the stairs, peeking over the terrace ledge. It then leapt onto the ledge and sat there, cocking its head and watching us curiously, as if inspecting the fruits of our labour. After a minute or two, it quietly disappeared again.

We do not pretend to know what either visit meant. But the timing stayed with us. The first came when we chose the place. The second came when we first shared the wine that grew from that choice.

That is how Standing Fox found its name, and why Trust your instinct became its motto.

At Standing Fox, release dates follow the wine rather than the calendar, with extended barrel and bottle ageing until each wine feels complete.
