Santa Cruz do Douro: At the Edge of Vinho Verde and the Douro

Understanding Standing Fox means first understanding where we are.

Our home is Santa Cruz do Douro, a parish in the municipality of Baião, Porto District. We are within the Vinho Verde Demarcated Region, but close to the boundary with the neighbouring Douro Demarcated Region. And below us is the river that gives Santa Cruz do Douro its name.

On a map, wine regions have precise boundaries. From the vineyard, geography feels less obedient.

This is still the green north of Portugal, with generous rainfall and Atlantic influence reaching inland. But Santa Cruz do Douro sits toward the warmer, more continental edge of Vinho Verde. Summers can be hot. South-facing granite slopes collect sunlight. The Douro river runs through the valley below.

That combination is part of what fascinated us.

Baião has a particular connection with Avesso, a Portuguese white variety capable here of ripeness and depth while retaining freshness. It immediately challenged the narrow idea of Vinho Verde as only light, youthful wine.

The proximity of the Douro adds another layer to the landscape, but not another appellation to our wines. Standing Fox is part of Vinho Verde. We are simply interested in what can happen at its inland edge, in a place where Atlantic influence and increasing continental warmth meet.

The Douro River is part of our daily view. It is there through winter pruning, spring growth, the heat of summer and harvest.

The demarcation defines the wine regions, not the river. Here, in Santa Cruz do Douro, the Douro is both a physical presence and part of the identity of the place.

Knowing When a Wine Is Ready

Knowing When a Wine Is Ready

At Standing Fox, release dates follow the wine rather than the calendar, with extended barrel and bottle ageing until each wine feels complete.
