There are not three Standing Fox wines so much as there are three interpretations of the same terroir. The White is elegant, layered, and nuanced. The Orange is arresting, with spice, dried fruit, and grip. The Red is dark, poised, and structured. Different in character, each began in the same place and with the same conviction.

The Building Blocks

The Avesso grape is at the heart of our white and orange wines. Pruned for low yields, it defies the usual trade-off between ripeness and acidity, running riot with both. Arinto brings citrus, minerality and restraint. Touriga Nacional is our red variety, redolent of herbs and earth, its tannic and acidic structure shaped by Atlantic winds that blow through our valley.

Oak, Time & Attention

Our work in the cellar is built around hands-on attention and deliberate choices. Some wines ferment in small open vessels before moving to barrel; others begin their life in wood. Oak, both new and neutral, plays a central role, from fermentation through extended élevage. We then give the wines plenty of time, in both barrel and bottle. We release them only when they tell us they are ready.

The Next Chapter

This is the beginning of a story that promises to be long and rich. As we continue to explore the possibilities of this site, we continue to experiment with new plantings: Chardonnay, Syrah, Viognier, Merlot, Nebbiolo. Winemaker Joana Pinhão guides the narrative as it unfolds, coaxing structure and nuance from each new variety, building wines to develop over years rather than seasons.
